Jimmy Castor Dies at 64
Prefix Magazine – Jimmy Castor, the band leader of the Jimmy Castor Bunch, died last Monday, January 16, in Las Vegas. The cause of his death is currently unknown.
To those who did not know Castor, he started as a doo-wop singer before moving into a disco funk saxophonist in the early 60’s. In 1972, Jimmy Castor Bunch Breakup Songs was formed – consisting Gerry Thomas for the keyboards/trumpets, Doug Gibson for the Bass, Harry Jensen for the guitars, Lenny Fridle Jr. for the Conga and Bobby Manigault for the drums.
The Jimmy Castor Bunch delivered several hits, one being “Troglodyte (Cave Man Inspirational Songs).” This was Castor’s biggest Hot 100 hit, reaching the No. 6 spot in the year 1972. Most recently, Kanye West sampled Castor’s “I Just Wanna Stop” on “We Don’t Care,” off his freshman album entitled “The College Dropout.”
